Gustavo Salas

Born October 8, 1962 in Pisac, Gustavo Salas Palomino inherited his artistic vocation. His father, a carpenter, began teaching him woodworking but young Gustavo would always escape to local ceramics workshops. Ceramics were his passion. From his childhood, he enjoyed working with clay, an activity that gave him much pleasure and happiness. He eventually studied in the Escuela Regional de Bellas Artes and in the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes in Lima.

One of his greatest personal challenges has been the creation of a workshop of his own where he is teaching others. "Teaching this work to others is a very gratifying experience. It gives you the sensation of transcending, as though what you know and are is continuing," he says.

"My inspiration comes from the rescuing of pre-Hispanic esthetic values to seek a lost identity. I strive to communicate my Andean and my universal identity, along with our cultural values. I also share my esthetic pleasure and enjoyment of the forms.

"All my designs are the result of research, in which – from a personal point of view – I synthesize ancestral and contemporary esthetic values. I hope you like my work and appreciate its cultural value as well as the quality and care I put into it."

Gustavo Salas participated in the 7th Biennal Conference Newcastle (United Kingdom) where he won the prize for the best Christmas product.
